Why Most Efforts at Change Are Doomed to Fail

Most people don’t fail because they’re lazy or unmotivated.

They fail because they’re working on the symptoms — not the source.

Take John, for example.

He was determined to stop procrastinating, so he tried what most productivity advice recommends:

  • He kept a time-tracking chart
  • He promised himself a daily reward for hitting his goals
  • He even told a friend to help keep him accountable

For a few days, things looked promising.

The chart helped him stay on track. The rewards gave him something to look forward to. His friend was supportive.

But by the second week, it all started falling apart.

  • He forgot to fill in the chart
  • He skipped his rewards out of guilt

How John Finally Broke His Pattern — and How You Can Too

A simple 3-step process to eliminate the beliefs keeping you stuck

Step 1: Identify the Pattern That’s Keeping You Stuck

We start by clearly defining the emotional or behavioral pattern you’re trying to change.

What do you keep doing — or avoiding — even though you know better?

Like John, who kept procrastinating on work he cared deeply about. He’d start out strong, but the moment something didn’t go perfectly, he’d spiral into hopelessness and avoidance.

Step 2: Uncover All the Hidden Beliefs Behind the Pattern

Most people don’t have one belief holding them back. They have a cluster.

Together, we identify every belief driving the unwanted pattern.

John’s included:

  • “Nothing I do is good enough.”
  • “What makes me good enough is doing things perfectly.”
  • “Nothing I do will work out.”
  • “If I fail, I’ll be rejected.”

Step 3: Eliminate the Beliefs So the Pattern Can’t Survive

Once we’ve found the root system, we eliminate it.

Not reframe it. Not “manage” it. Eliminate it.

Using the Lefkoe Method, we cleared John’s beliefs one by one.

The result?

He started finishing what he started. He felt calm, capable, and free — not just for a few weeks, but years later.

Scientific Proof: The Lefkoe Method Creates Real, Lasting Change

Most personal development tools sound good on paper — but few have ever been tested under scientific scrutiny.

That’s why, in 2004, Dr. Lee Sechrest, Professor Emeritus at the University of Arizona, led a double-blind clinical study to test whether The Lefkoe Method could eliminate one of the most deeply rooted fears: the fear of public speaking.

This wasn’t a mild fear.

Participants had been struggling with extreme anxiety — some for decades. Most had already tried other solutions.

In fact, many had been attending Toastmasters meetings for years, hoping that practice and exposure would eventually reduce their fear.

But despite all that effort, their fear hadn’t budged.

So Dr. Sechrest designed a study to compare the results of those long-time Toastmasters participants with a new group using only The Lefkoe Method.

Study Overview:

  • 37 participants

  • All rated their fear of public speaking as a 7 or higher on a 1–10 scale

  • Split into two groups:

    • One continued using Toastmasters as usual

    • The other received 3.3 hours on average of The Lefkoe Method with a certified facilitator

The Lefkoe group experienced a dramatic reduction in fear (78% improvement) — in just a few hours.

The Toastmasters group?

Despite years of showing up, speaking in public, and trying to “push through the fear,” their anxiety remained unchanged.

Then, for ethical reasons, the Toastmasters group was given access to The Lefkoe Method too.

Their fear disappeared as well.

And It Lasted.

Six months later, the researchers followed up with every participant.
They expected the fear might return.

But it hadn’t.

“We had expected that the fear would come back… but it didn’t.
They had, in fact, changed. Their fear of public speaking was gone.”

This study was later published in the peer-reviewed journal Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy — because the results were strong enough to meet scientific standards.

Why This Matters

This wasn’t just a one-off. It wasn’t a “placebo effect.”
It was real, lasting transformation — documented, verified, and replicable.

It showed that The Lefkoe Method could do something that years of traditional exposure-based training couldn’t do:
Eliminate the root cause of fear by removing the beliefs that created it in the first place.

Two years after I went through this methodology, it’s fantastic. It’s changed my life. I used to feel when I was in front of people a general feeling of anxiety and fear – sweaty palms, sweaty brow, my voice would quiver, my stomach would tie up in knots. The way I feel now after doing The Lefkoe Method is I don’t feel the anxiety I did before whether in a one-to-one conversation or a group. I feel much more confident. I don’t feel a sense of urgency, a sense of anxiety, or a sense of fear. I just feel kind of an excitement. And it really doesn’t matter as much who I’m talking to or the demeanor of who I’m talking to. If they’re friendly, great. If they are not so friendly, I can read that and understand where they’re coming from but it does not reduce my sense of confidence.
