It is possible to permanently eliminate your depression.

The purpose of this post is to assure those of you who are feeling depressed (or who know anyone who is depressed) that it is possible to get rid of it totally. I was depressed for about 30 years, so much so that I thought of suicide frequently.  I haven’t felt anywhere near depressed for over 15 years.  If I can do it, you can too.

Depression is ultimately the result of feeling hopeless and helpless. It is experienced as an overwhelming sense of despair.  Unfortunately, this mental disorder is very prevalent, with estimates that almost one in six Americans will experience depression in their lifetime.  Moreover, many people whose symptoms are not serious enough to be classified as chronically depressed still experience bouts of despair that they are unable to shake for days on end.

There are some people who claim that depression is chemical and that the brain of depressed people is actually different than the brain of normal people.  A study conducted a few years ago did show that MRIs of depressed people were different from the MRIs of “normal” people.  The study went on to describe, however, how  after a few months of cognitive behavioral therapy the brains looked the same.  In other words, it is more likely that the mental state caused the changed brain state than an abnormal brain state produced depression.

Luckily, depression, like most mental problems, is the result of beliefs and conditionings, all of which can be eliminated by the Lefkoe Belief Process (LBP) and the Lefkoe Stimulus Process (LStimP).

The following is a list of some beliefs that clients with depression have identified and eliminated. Can you see that almost anyone with most of these beliefs would have to feel depressed, at least to some extent?

If someone didn’t have any of these beliefs and, instead, held their opposite—such  as “I control my life, not other people or circumstances” “My life is whatever I make it,” “I am good enough, important, and deserving”—could they possibly feel depressed?

Say each of the following beliefs out loud. If any of them resonate with you, it’s a belief you hold. Even though you may have held it since you were a child, and even if you’ve tried a number of ways to get rid of it, LBP can assist you to eliminate it.

Typical beliefs that underlie depression

  • I’m powerless.
  • I’m not good enough.
  • I’m not deserving.
  • I’m inadequate.
  • I’m not important.
  • I’m worthless.
  • I’m not lovable.
  • Who I am is not okay.
  • I have no value.
  • There’s something wrong with me.
  • Happiness doesn’t last.
  • It’s not safe to be myself.
  • Life is hard, painful, a struggle, and stressful.
  • Being responsible is a burden.
  • I have to be perfect or people won’t accept me.
  • I can’t have what I want.
  • I don’t matter.

Ruth eliminated her life-long depression

Ruth Bonomo of Westport, CT, who used the LBP to eliminate many beliefs like these, described how she totally ended her life-long depression:

“I used to walk around enclosed in a veil of depression, fear, and self-loathing. I was always at the edge of the pit, ready to jump in and relinquish responsibility for my life and how it was turning out. I was on the verge of abandoning my family when my son became ill. After he spent several days in the hospital I realized I better get myself together; this kid needed and deserved me and I needed to be a responsible parent.

“I found Shelly Lefkoe and the Lefkoe Belief Process.  Immediately I began to shed emotional pounds. It was as if I had been running around on an exercise wheel in a hamster cage my whole life, and now I was free.

“Now I experience my emotions very differently. I’m not at the effect of them; I just have them. I get to feel all my emotions without having to worry about the pit. The most remarkable thing I’ve gained from eliminating beliefs with the Lefkoe Belief Process is self-love and acceptance. Now that I love myself, I am much less judgmental of others. I no longer worry about who I am and what people think of me. Everything is easier to deal with. The problems of life are still there, but I experience them without the drama and feeling that the world is coming to an end.”

When people are feeling depressed it feels like there is no way out and never will be.  It feels like there is not much point in doing anything because nothing will make any difference.  There isn’t even motivation to try to get better because it feels like nothing will help, like you will be stuck like this forever.

Psychotherapists have used The Lefkoe Method successfully

Margaret Carter, M.A., Family Therapist, said the following about using The Lefkoe Method to treat depression:

“I have used The Lefkoe Method numerous times in my practice for depression. In one such case the client had life-long depression and had made several prior attempts at counseling, to no avail.

“The client’s behaviors were self-destructive and self-limiting, and self-esteem was very low.

“After using The Lefkoe Method the client reported increased self-esteem, peace of mind, relief—for the first time in life—from depression, and expanded maturation and hope.

“The Lefkoe Method can be life transforming. It also meets our great need for an effective, brief therapy.”

Everyday I wish I was no more, I wish my kids would disappear. I know its horrible to say, but I know I need help, I have tried to change my way of thinking, detox, and even medicine. Either, I am not being consistent or I am just destined to die this way. Hopefully something on your site will help me and not just be a way to take money from my pocket.

    Hi Morty,

I’ve been struggling with depression now for about 4 years. Its been so long since I’ve felt myself. I used to be so outgoing and free to be myself. And then my boyfriend cheated on me, all my friends turned their backs on me and from then on it left me feeling worthless and hating myself. I used to love to dance and sing and act, but now its like I can’t ever go back to being who i was. I still love doing those things and every time i get a chance, its like I get a glimpse of how things used to be, but feeling like i have nobody around me who will take the time to care about me and feeling alone in the world brings me back to that checklist of beliefs.

      Hi Mayuk,

It can be tricky to find all the beliefs that cause a given problem. We will be creating a course that will teach people how to do this at some point.

For the moment, the best suggestion I have is to have us help you in one-to-one phone or Skype sessions. Call us for more information at (415) 506-4472.

Mr. Lefkoe, I feel alot like this lady Felicia on your reply list.. I seem to go into these depression “funks” ?? I get to the point I don’t want to get out of bed, I don’t want do anything, go anywhere, I can’t afford anything, (!!Whats the point attitude!!) In my life now I have quit drugs ( smoking pot, smoking meth,) quit alcohol (daily drinker,) quit Perscription drug abuse(mother had unlimited supply of hydromorpine when she was dying, which I wound up taking all day for over 3 years.) smoking cigarettes (2.5 packs a day)…. I (was) working out daily,, I thought I was going to have finally be able to move on and be succesful,,, Instead I fall into these “funks” where I miss all kinds of work, don’t get out of bed for days, and feel like “what’s the point to it all”??I even went to a doctor finally who prescribed anti depression meds which made me more depressed and actually planned out but obviously didn’t succeed in suicide.. I did try your eliminating a lifelong belief(my father was disgusted by us kids) but it seemed to fade quickly.. I do appreciate your time and help, you seem like a very kind and good man, I think it’s great that you truly want to help people!! Thank you.. John

      Hi John,

Depression is caused by a number of beliefs and conditionings, sometimes 20 or more. Eliminating one belief won’t solve the problem.

It can be done. I’ve done it as have our clients.

If you want to work with us, please call us at (415) 506-4472.

A very interesting and informative post. Lefkoe Medhod appears to be a very good system for controlling the Symptoms of Depression It is my opinion that modern society has resulted in many suffers of depression feeling isolated and that theres a stigma attached to there depression. It is this stigma that often results in people shying away from the help and Depression Advice that will get them on the road to recovery. Thanks for this great post. Rose

I’ve been stuck for about 4-5 years now. I have no drive to do anything.
I feel like I’ve just given up on everything, and on top of that comes the shame, guilt, low-self esteam. My mind sometimes just wonders away. I find it hard to control my thoughts.
    Thank you,
    Felicia

    Morty,

Great post as usual! You are so right that, if you believed the opposite of the beliefs you listed above, you couldn’t possibly be depressed! And your program is the only one (and I have looked at many) that teaches you that these beliefs are not reality; they are simply YOUR reality and they can be changed. They really can and for good!! I am on your Natural Confidence course at belief #14 right now. I am noticing a change. It feels like I am shedding “peelings” of negativity one after the other. When you shed your “peelings” you are lighter and happier! I say to anyone who thinks they have seen it all before, YOU HAVEN’T!! Give the Lefkoe Method a real shot. You will be so glad you did:)

Bill (former skeptic, even after I got the program and went through the first two beliefs…now I get it:))

Morty, a while back I tried eliminating a lifelong belief using your system. It didn’t work. The problem was that you have a one-size-fits-all approach to beliefs and how they develop. There’s no way it could serve everybody.

Depression isn’t caused by beliefs. Some forms are chemical and others, like dysthymia, are triggered by outside events. Yes, outside events can trigger depression. Take an otherwise normal person, strip them of everything they have, truncate their future, take away their friends, their home and their dreams, and make them live somewhere they hate, destitute, until they die … hello! You’ve got a pretty depressed person.

Changing some beliefs isn’t going to make that person better anytime soon.

      Hi Ana,

Thanks for taking the time to write and giving us your opinion.

I do know that I and many others have totally eliminated our depression by eliminating the beliefs and conditionings that caused it. Obviously it might not work for everyone.

My experience is that outside events doesn’t cause depression or any other negative feeling. It is the meaning we give those events, and many people in the worst circumstances have given positive meanings to their circumstances and not been affected adversely.

Depressed people seem to get totally engulfed in their feelings, so much so that they can’t seem to separate themselves from their feelings.

It’s a horrible way to spend your life. Self-love seems to be at the root of the problem.
