“What is your understanding of the Law of Attraction?” I asked Joe Vitale.  He has become a good friend who I really love and admire.  He and his wife Nerissa had traveled from their home in Texas to visit my wife Shelly and me for the weekend.  Over dinner one night we talked about a wide variety of topics, including Internet marketing, spirituality, and relationships.

I asked this specific question because I knew that Joe had written extensively on the Law of Attraction (LOA) and I wanted to hear his thoughts.  Over the years I have gone from totally believing in the LOA to thinking it is absolute nonsense.  I thought it was time to finally resolve my position on the issue.

Joe started by explaining that he did not accept what many LOA teachers claim, which is that all you need to do is focus on what you want with enough emotion and it will “show up” in your life.  Joe contended that merely sitting in a room focusing on a goal would not produce results; action was required.

Moreover, he argued, your intention can be totally stopped if you have beliefs in the way.  I agreed wholeheartedly and added that getting rid of beliefs actually opens up possibilities that hadn’t existed before.

After a fascinating give and take, I think Joe agrees with me on the essentials, but he is going to write a blog post today on his version of what happened.  I can’t wait to read his post and see if we do fully agree on what the LOA actually is and is not.

Here’s my current position that resulted from our discussion.  The following description of how the LOA works makes more sense to me than any I’ve ever seen.

Create a clear vision of what you want

First, create a vision.  In order to have an effective vision you need to distinguish between a vision and a goal.  A goal is something specific you want to have happen; it is measurable.  A vision is like a direction you want to go in; it is a process; it is never ending.  Wanting to teach something specific to 100 people in a workshop is an example of a goal. Wanting to help as many people as possible improve their lives in any way you can, is a vision.  You can achieve a vision and still have more to do the next day.  Once a goal is achieved, there is nothing more to do.

Be passionate about your vision

Second, you need to be passionate about your vision.  You have to be so excited about your vision that you constantly look for ways to achieve it. You need a vision that you really are passionate about having or doing or being.  This is not the same as holding a vision strongly and with emotion, as some teachers have recommended.  As you will see in a moment, it’s not having emotion as such that is important, it is about really caring about your vision.

Get rid of beliefs that will sabotage your vision

Third, eliminate any beliefs that are inconsistent with your vision.  If you don’t, the beliefs will likely foreclose the possibility of getting what you want.  For example, if you focus on the vision of having a great relationship (as distinct from the goal of having a relationship with a specific person) and you believe Relationships don’t work, I’m not loveable, and Men/women can’t be trusted, you probably will find it difficult to have a good, long term, nurturing relationship.

Here’s why.  Our beliefs are the primary determinant for the meaning we give events moment to moment, and that meaning determines our behavior and emotions. For example, assume you had the beliefs I just listed above.  You now meet someone you like and a relationship is forming.  The meaning you give to everything your new girl/boyfriend does and says is directly affected by these beliefs.

Imagine your girl/boyfriend doesn’t call when promised.  Given these three and other similar beliefs his/her behavior will likely occur to you as: He/she has probably just been stringing me along.  He/she doesn’t really like me.  I’m happy he/she never called, as it probably wouldn’t have worked out anyway.  If you didn’t have those beliefs, you might well have given the same event the following meanings: It could mean he/she got busy.  It could mean he/she forgot.  It could mean a lot of different things.

And if that is the way your new friend’s behavior occurs to you, the relationship has little chance of surviving.

Eliminating beliefs creates new possibilities

Fourth, eliminating beliefs literally creates new possibilities that didn’t exist before.  Because how we view reality determines the possibilities for action that are open for us, eliminating limiting beliefs literally creates new possibilities in your life.  When you say something is impossible it actually becomes impossible for you. If you believe Life is difficult, you will experience things not going the way you wanted them to go as upsetting obstacles rather than exciting challenges.  If you believe I’m not capable or I’m not competent, would you likely try to do something you believe you can’t do?  And if you tried, do you think you would succeed with these beliefs?  (See my earlier post where I discuss this issue in detail. https://www.mortylefkoe.com/create-possibilities/

Notice what emerges

Fifth, notices what “emerges.”  After you have created new possibilities by eliminating the relevant limiting beliefs, your passionately-held vision will insure that you constantly focus on what “emerges” on a daily basis.  As an example, my vision is to help create a world in which people are empowered to rid themselves of their self-imposed limitations and create unimagined new possibilities for their lives.  I’ve eliminated many beliefs that could keep me from pursuing that vision.  (See my blog post in which I discuss the idea of emerging in more detail: https://www.mortylefkoe.com/what-i-just-learned-will-transform-my-life-%E2%80%A6-and-yours/

I keep looking at what emerges in my life to see what opportunities there are to manifest my vision.  After completing a study with the University of Arizona that showed that our Natural Confidence (NC) program reduced stress by over 50%, it occurred to me that we might be able to help insurance companies reduce their out of pocket health care expenditures by having their policyholders complete the NC program.  While I was trying to figure out how to approach health insurance companies a friend suggested we bypass the insurance companies and go directly to organizations that hire the workers and pay the insurance premiums.  These possibilities just “emerged” without any effort. But if I hadn’t been looking for them, I wouldn’t have noticed them.  As a result of what I noticed, we intend to conduct another study to determine how much lower health care costs will be for employees who eliminate the 19 beliefs and four conditionings on the NC program as compared to employees who don’t use NC.

Proving that the NC program will significantly reduce health insurance costs probably will lead to hundreds of companies making the NC program available to hundreds of thousands or even millions of employees.  That is my vision manifesting in the world.  Because there is no way I could have foreseen this possibility even a few months ago, conducting this new study couldn’t have possibly been a goal; it is, however, a manifestation of my vision.  Before I could create this new study I needed the results of the last study and a friend who suggested we conduct another study with business firms instead of insurance companies.

Now here’s why passion is important.  If I were not passionate about helping people free themselves from their self-imposed limitations, I might not have thought of doing the original study that showed the NC program reduces stress, or thought about making that program available to insurance companies, or listened to my friend’s suggestion to go directly to organizations who pay the insurance premiums.

Take action

Sixth, take action.  Although some teachers of the LOA claim that action is not required to manifest what you desire in reality, most of them disagree with this point and argue that we need to act on the opportunities that we notice.  I am in full agreement with that point of view.

The crucial importance of taking action clarifies why you need to eliminate beliefs and be passionate about your vision.  If you notice a possibility for achieving your vision and you believe you are not good enough, or capable, or competent, or deserving, you are unlikely to act.  And if you are not really excited about manifesting your vision in the world and always looking for ways to do it, you will not notice the new possibilities that emerge and act on them.

If there are no beliefs in the way and if you are passionate about your vision, you probably will take the action needed to make your vision real in the world.

So here’s my final take on the LOA

To summarize what I realized during my conversation with Joe:  The “Law of Attraction” is really a misnomer.  It is neither a “law” nor do you literally “attract” anything.  There is, however, a very effective way to get what you want.

  1. create a vision,
  2. be passionate about that vision and make it a major focus of your life (as distinct from merely focusing on a goal “with emotion”),
  3. eliminate any beliefs that are inconsistent with your vision,
  4. notice the new possibilities you have created,
  5. observe the opportunities that “emerge” from those possibilities,
  6. and take action to implement that possibilities.

If you follow these six steps the chances are very good you will get what you want.  You will have manifested your vision in your universe. This approach is not an airy-fairy, mystical way to get things to magically appear in the world; instead, it is a very practical series of steps that will enable you to bring your vision into reality most of the time.

Yes, the Law of Attraction really works, but reflects our dominant and most practiced thoughts. We can’t spend 5 minutes on a new thought and 23 hours and 55 minutes thinking the old thoughts and have anything change.

That being said, we can simultaneously be positive and believing while also maintaining a healthy degree of scepticism. The Law of Attraction is not about ignoring common sense.

We must also understand that the Universe works at its own speed. Although instant manifestation may sometimes happen, our desire will manifest in the universe’s timeframe rather than ours! It could even be that the universe knows that we are not yet ready to receive our desire.

But Universe never let the control to the human, so manifestation is just an unfolding of universe. So no speed manifestation.

Hey gang, great post topic and discussion. This isn’t an “either/or” situation. Both intention and action propel you into the flow state. Check out Mihaly Csikszentmihaly (spelling is probably wrong) and his work on the flow state. That’s when you experience serendipities and synchronicities that are mind blowing. Also, action means “showing up”, really. And when you show up, you put yourself in line for great things. At the same time, things also just show up at your door too because you are a vibrational match. Just play the game and have fun!

    Morty,
I am using the 6 step process in my writing. This week I started getting up early to spend time learning the writing craft. I am reading a new book of fantasy/science fiction and am using the basic technique of storytelling I’ve learned to pick out where want, obstacle, and resolution appear. Having a vision helps me focus on what is truly important to make it real.

    Hi Morty,

Law of attraction do not work without it’s own opposite. For an example if you state the affirmation to attract happy into life it presupposes the unhappiness also. Happiness can’t be created without unhappiness. As soon as you affirm or visualize, it creates the happiness as an expected way,but sooner, you can’t feel the happiness because you are constantly in the same state, as soon as this point get reached, it automatically moves you through the unhappiness and then happiness and then unhappiness this goes indefinitely. So successful creation is never possible through Law of attraction.

I definitely agree that words mean different things to different people and this is most likely based off of the fact that multiple people have different experiences. Maybe at one point something happened in the flow that you were vaguely passionate about, therefore painting a picture and setting a definition in your mind of what passionate means. Maybe for another person they were passionate about achieving a particular defined goal and that is what passion holds a strong connection to within them. The world and what we make of it tends to be very relative based on our thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Would you agree?

    Hi Morty,

Great blog post! I just happened to have watched The Secret four nights ago, and I’m really thankful for your post–it is very helpful….I will definately follow your 6 steps becasue the LM has worked so well for me. I really enjoyed reading these blogs simultaneously (your’s and Joes’s), and what nice things he has to say about you as well! When Joe says, “Morty is probaly the most loving man I’ve ever met. He exudes unconditional acceptance. He radiates love…” this comment really speaks to how well the LM works and how much serenity and confidence come from removing negative beliefs and conditionings–thank you for all your work that you have done!

Excellent explanation, Morty. Extremely helpful. It also helps that I agree that focus without action doesn’t get you anywhere. A coach I know puts it this way: Pray and move your feet. Or… you can’t drive a parked car. I also agree that attempting to take action without first getting rid of limiting beliefs is like trying to run under water in hiking boots. You gotta get rid of those boots and come up on dry land!

I would agree with John, that when I just relax and allow things to fall into place as they should, they do. In fact the more I just open myself up to allow the Universe to give and provide, the better my life is. When I become passionate or envision something that I must give myself to whole-heartedly (such as following your 6 step plan and expecting a positive end result), it seems too forced and seems to fizzle out and not come to fruition. Which then reeks havoc on my psyche, as well as my self esteem.

After reading your conclusion of the LOA as well as studying numerous famed leaders of LOA I have come to think that LOA is like religion. In that the idea and concept is here to help incorporate a better place for all of us to live and thrive. It’s how each individual interprets it that will benefit each of us most. Just as a Monk and a Priest have different religious agendas, they are both seeking enlightment and a purpose to enhance their community, however they have very different ideas on how it should be accomplished and they rely upon their knowledge and experiences to feel at peace with their beliefs. Now neither of them are wrong or right it is just who they are and what feels right for them, which will be honored and accepted by the Universe.

People have been able to attract situations in their lives under many approaches and through many ways. To say there is only one way to do it and it is the only way is to say that there is only one religion and it is the only way to find peace and harmony within. We all know what would happen if that were suddenly declared! And besides, I think we are all beginning to understand that it’s not the religion, but the spiritual awareness of the individual that makes them who they are. I believe that LOA falls under the same category and it is up to each individual to find the way that it works for them; we must know ourselves and know our gifts in order to know how best to create for ourselves. There is no, one way. However I do believe that the fastest way to manifest anything has always been through Love and Gratitude, whether you’re passionate about saving the world or attracting a new car. Love must always come first, if you show love you are opening up the possibilities to allow that which you attract. It took loving myself enough to follow the path less beaten and trust my instincts, and my world has changed completely. Thanks for letting me share.

      Jennifer,
Human beings are unique in that they want to label and categorize and define everything around them. I think when we get into trouble is calling a so-called concept a “law”. Your relaxation process worked for you and as you said: where would we be if there was only “one” way of getting the things you want? Morty is clarifying the process so that other people have a practical and working way of getting what they want. The LOA troubled me because of the “believing” and “not taking action” and “putting feeling into it”. Passion is what I feel for writing; eliminating the beliefs through the NC program opened the way for me. His 6 step process, as the Occurring Process, appears as if it could become engrained after using it over and over so that it becomes a part of our being. It looks as if you “put your beliefs” in their place rather than eliminating them. Speaking for myself; I need the step by step process; this way that part of me responds and learns something new.

Thanks for your comment Lauren and I agree we are all on a journey to find what brings us peace and happiness. I think Mortey’s 6 step program is a great idea and completely support it. In no way was I trying to discredit it, only to express that we should all take the time to look within before taking anyone’s idea and make sure it is a system that is in harmony with the path we are on. I truly honor and appreciate what Marty has created as he has been very helpful to myself as well as others. There just seems to be so much mystery around the LOA (it’s even been called a Secret ;-)) that I feel we should approach it like anything else, go with a concept that feels right.

      Hi Jennifer,

I’m responding to your first comment up there. ;) The human race is divided horribly. Compare it to any other creature on earth and you see the difference. We do not behave in a sustainable manner and have no checks and balances which work out a homeostatic existence.

Religion is almost always a force for this division. LOA is no different. LOA encourages people to behave separately, without a common goal or cause which enables them to behave as a cohesive whole. Take ants. Now ants act as a whole and the environment accepts them and keeps them in check. Humans revile and overcome anything in their environment which seeks to keep them in check. The many paths that religion offers do not add up to unity without it’s individual members for the majority and for nearly 100% of them it doesn’t unite them to make them like ants on the earth. Different religions, well, if within these there is a lack of cohesion, between them there is even more disarray.

      Where does LOA come from?

It comes from a medium whose claims cannot be verified. People just have to believe that the medium’s source is really an entity who has a good motive.

However, it doesn’t have a good motive. We humans are the only race on earth which used cognition to guide ourselves to such an extent. Beavers are the animal next to us who affects massive change on their environment. It is obvious that controlling beliefs, as Morty teaches, controls action. In this case, LOA is a teaching that causes lack of right action and plenty of wrong action.

Only by acting like ants and cooperating can humans survive on this limited closed environment called Earth. There isn’t going to be an last minute “Hail Mary” to allow humans to suddenly solve the issues through genius or through an ability to escape from the planet to spread there problems elsewhere.

The entity that is behind LOA is the same entity or group that is behind religion in general, government and greedy commerce all of which are pounding the final nails in the coffin of humanity while keeping a watch for any efforts to truly unite humanity so that it can be saved. LOA and just about every other large belief has no real world effect to do anything but make individuals feel better in some way or other or make a difference which is nominal when considering the impact on separateness thinking, selfishness and greed – which constitutes the fatal disease of humanity.

Wow. This comment will come across as pretty dark and I don’t mean it to be. I just mean that any “global belief” (affecting our world paradigm) needs to be analyzed as to it’s real world results specifically on how a group of people holding such a paradigm behave and interact with each other and what impact they have on their environment is. They MUST begin to interact in a sane, organized, selfless and united way and this must be pervasive not a fluke. They must be led to respect and work along with their environment beautifying and caring for the very resources which sustain them. I believe this exists but it’s not LOA or most others. LOA believes that everything is infinite here on earth and denies that everybody can’t have everything they could possibly imagine and ask for.

    Morty,
Thanks so much for sharing your conversation with Joe Vitale on the LOA. A couple of weeks ago, I sent you a personal message on this subject and you said you had severe doubts about it. Your 6 step process is more practical than the process Rhonda Byrene suggested in The Secret; I was skeptical of her “having emotion” and “believing” steps and not taking action and my heart wasn’t in it. I also noticed that when my mind is free of limiting beliefs, I can “see” the possibilities more clearly. I am going to copy the 6 step process and apply it to my writing and other things I have going on in my life.
Love and Light on your Journey,
    Lauren
PS @ Terry T: though these two words have different roots; they are basically neutral at describing the same feeling.

That’s not my experience Lauren. There’s a very different energy between passion and enthusiasm. And, if you check I believe you’ll find a very different, though maybe subtle, experience in and with each energy. One distinction is that when I’m passionate about something I tend to have an attachment to a certain outcome. When I’m enthusiastic I am more present, flowing with the energy, accepting how the process is showing up.

        Terry,
If I say, “I am so passionate about writing.” and “I am so enthusiastic about writing.” I feel and see no difference and I write poetry which is all about the sounds of words and how they fit with what I’m writing about. I suppose that is what I’m most attracted to in choosing words to describe a feeling: the sound of it. If it describes the feeling I am shooting for, I’ll use it. If I don’t like it, I won’t. To me, as if is for you, it’s all about the “feeling”, though the way I use them is if the sound fits, rather than a meaning because-and you say it is nitpicky-the meaning comes from different roots. Interesting discussion.

        Hi Terry,

Although the word Passionate feels right to me, I’m not attached to that which I’m passionate about. For me passion connotes more emotion and commitment than enthusiasm.

When I think about the difference I want to make, passion seems to describe my inner state more than enthusiasm, and although I used to be attached, I am not any longer.

I think that words have different connotations for different people, apart from the root.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read my posts and for commenting.

    Hi Morty,
are you substituting the word “emerge” to “attract” ? or are you saying that we actually do not attract things it is just a misconception ? from my own experience we really do attract there is some thing call the vibration as well, are you saying that you disagree with this Morty.

      Hi Mayuk,

Yes, I disagree with the “Law” that says we literally attract things or events into our lives. I think we get what we want by using the six step process I described in my post.

For every time it seems as if you wanted something and it showed up, there are ten times you focused on something with strong emotion and it didn’t show up.

        Hi Morty ,
but there is something called vibration that we all have ,i am a fan of
your process but there are therapies that i have tried and things did show up after i did those process (one of them is the Emotional Freedom Technique )
were its not me but almost all have found similar results like me .Out of the blue things show up and all of them are focused on the same things that is getting rid of patterns that are there in the subconscious same as what LBP is aimed to do .
and there are also reasons that why things don’t show up which maybe you are in the wrong vibration or your desire is wrong .what is your say on this because what you say is great but you saying that the law does not exist sounds little uncomfortable especially after chatting with Joe Vitale the star of the “Secret” .

I think the most important step is eliminating the beliefs that are blocking you. I have been writing down each blocking belief that I can find. Many are not easy to notice and this list has taken me a more that a year to compile. I have close to 500 different beliefs that I have eliminated. It is just now that I’m noticing improvements. I’m not working at the LOA, I’m playing at it.
Here is an example of a belief: If I had money, my ex will take it away from me.
So it is safer not to attract abundance than to have the ex take it away.

Good points. On the other hand I have to disagree that the things cant be attracted. Just the other day I needed money. I just needed it to buy something that probably will be beneficial to me. I was making a cup of coffe when the girlfriend came to get me telling me there were someone at the door wondering if i wanted to sell an old car that i have on the yard. First i didnt really get what she was talking about. But when i walked to the door there was a guy there that just drove by and thought(felt probably) he would ask if he could by that car. So thats more attracting than visioning. Or perhaps allowing. I didnt create a vision or anything like that, nor did i do any law of attraction thing exercises. It was basically a real need that was allowed to be met. And thats probably our only “problem”, we dont allow for our needs to be met. And so we live in this wierd illusionary world where complaining is somhow a good thing and reality is just miracles or coincidences…

      Hi John,

I too have had things just “show up” when I needed them. But then I also have intended for things to show up that didn’t. You can’t take one instance of manifesting something in reality and create a “law” out of that. More often than not merely focusing on what you want doesn’t work.

For eg…take the law of gravity states that if you jump off a tall cliff and hit the ground you will die….no matter who you are.

The law of gravity doesntcare if you are black or white, male or female, young or old….the results will be the same.

John, I’m with Morty on this. It’s one reason I’m still with him and I have gotten rid of a lot of other like subscriptions. There’s really no such thing as intention-manifestation. I’ve deliberately intended lots of things that have never happened and have not intended lots of things that did happen. It’s totally accidental.

It’s opportunity + action that does it. Without the opportunity, you obviously have no action to take. That’s been the main challenge with me — lack of opportunity. I’m more than willing to do whatever action is required.

            Hi Ana,

In a sense you can create opportunities by eliminating beliefs and having your passionate vision lead you to notice what emerges. Then that same vision will “motivate” you to take action.

            Love,Morty

I do what John did a lot and always get the expected result as long as I am approaching it correctly.

The reasons are a few and they overlap quite a bit 1) I use the least amount of “effort” and the greatest amount of allowing, 2) I’ve become aware of something about to occur instead of developed a vision that I wish to manifest, 3) I create as little vision as possible, 4) I become part of a larger and unstoppable vision.

I don’t use the wording in the LOA to describe the phenomenon as it doesn’t work 100% of the time and therefore is not true. It leads to all of the issues mentioned and some even worse results I won’t go into.

Here is an example of what I do applied to something small and immediate like driving. I’ll be driving in difficult traffic conditions. I need to get into the exit lane and I only have a limited amount of time. Once a need enters my conscious awareness the opening is on the way. I take action by using my indicator light. I don’t need to push and shove, or get stressed. Often I don’t need to speed up or slow down but sometimes I do in order to take advantage of a nice opening. Sometimes I need to “knock on the door” by honking. A stressed face usually becomes a solid nod or even melts into a smile as I am allowed in. Lastly, but unusually, almost never, I will not get in.

The point is that the thought/need itself entering my awareness is proof that the event is on its way to fulfillment…unless it’s from someone or a part of me which is not manifesting correctly. In that instance, I can usually know that I was not in a state of awareness to begin with which is how the thought was able to arrive along with it’s result which was a lack of result.

The other factor is that a thought can arise without the actual manifestation because it will arrive in stages and at each stage I need to grow in a certain manner in order for the next layer to happen.

Instead of ‘creating a vision’ I clarify for myself the vision that the most powerful person has (I believe in a personal God) and find my part in it at any given moment. It is a little like sailing as opposed to rowing and in this way I’m always successful and though I can be impeded I cannot be stopped.

Lastly, in the rare occurrence that I couldn’t exit (in the above example) this is due to personality. Mystics get into problems by concluding that life and higher forms with personality arise from consciousness. In actuality, consciousness arises from life. Higher forms of consciousness arise from higher forms of life. All life has location for all life exists in a matrix of a body of some kind. Even God does as understood in the Bible (despite what world Biblical religions teach). God’s creations always create near infinite possibilities. Human creations tend to create ever increasing limitations. When something is envisioned that is not coming to pass or comes to pass and then is destroyed and never recovered it is always because 1) it is not in accordance with God’s vision and 2) it is created by a person who didn’t create in accordance with what God created.

That said, things that are not “necessary” sometimes come to mind. Back to the road. Sometimes I have a thought to move lanes or speed up or slow down although nothing has yet entered my consciousness through my gross senses to indicate a need. I do so anyhow safely. Nowadays nearly 100% of the time I had just prepared for a future event. Other people and animals or just the world is unfolding around me and we are in communication. If we are allowing we can help each other unfold and become more harmoniously all together.

Thanks Morty–another good one, clear and useful!

Since you are clarifying and making distinctions, I have one little nitpick though. The word passion comes from the Latin “pati”, meaning “suffer”. That’s an emotion I prefer to avoid. Instead, I go for enthusiasm, which has as its root, “Theos”, God, and “Hu”, sanskrit for God.

Words have energy and assist us in the process of manifesting. they are one of the ways we direct energy. Energy follows thought and manifestation follows energy. In the case of enthusiasm, its ‘vibration’ can assist in bringing the higher energy down into the physical world. This isn’t airy fairy. It is subtle. And practical. And powerful.

indeed..u just forgot to mention that the word “enthusiastic” is Greek, meaning “with” (en) ‘”God’ (theos)!

      take care!
